Five Residencies in Finland for Art Critics

February 11, 2022

The Shine on Critique! project is looking for applicants for five residencies in Finland. The residencies are aimed at art critics. The application period is open until the 6th of March 2022.

The critics’ residencies have been set up close to art events related to five different fields: literature, visual arts, theatre, film, and music. The residencies last about a week. They are intended to promote the networking of critics and to support their professional skills.

You can apply for a residency if you are a critic or art journalist. The project will reserve and pay for the chosen critics’ accommodation. Residents must reserve the travel tickets to their destination themselves with funding received from the project. In addition to travel and accommodation costs, the project offers a residency grant of 400 euros. Applicants from the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and Russia will be prioritizated.

The resident is expected to attend the destination event. The program may also include informal meetings or colloquies. The program for each residency will be worked out with the chosen critic, but there will also be free time for the residents to get acquainted with their destination as well as for independent work. Every chosen critic is expected to write an entry for the project’s blog. It is not required that the critic writes about the exhibitions or performances experienced in connection with the residency in any other media.

THE RESIDENCIES

Literature

8.-15.5.2022, Helsinki. The critic will attend the Helsinki Lit literature event between the 13th and 14th of May 2022. The resident may work independently. Information about the festival: https://helsinki-lit.fi/fi/helsinki-lit/

Film

13.-20.6.2022, Sodankylä. The critic will attend the Sodankylä Film Festival between the 15th and 19th of June 2022. The program will be agreed on with the festival. The travel dates for this residence are not final; they will be settled with the critic depending on their origin of departure. https://msfilmfestival.fi/uutiset/37-sodankylan-elokuvajuhlat-15-19-6-2022/

Music

24.7.-1.8.2022, Hailuoto. The critic will attend the Hailuoto Music Festival. The program of the festival includes, among other things, classical and folk music. https://hailuodonmusiikkipaivat.fi/

Theatre

1.-8.8.2022, Tampere. The critic will attend the Tampere Theatre Festival. The festival program will be announced in May. https://www.teatterikesa.fi/en/

Visual arts

19.-27.8.2022, Helsinki. The critic will get acquainted with the offerings of Helsinki’s visual arts scene, especially the museum of contemporary art Kiasma’s Ars 22 exhibition and its accompanying program. https://kiasma.fi/en/exhibitions/ars22/

HOW TO APPLY

You can apply for a residency by sending a motivation letter and CV by e-mail to the Shine on Critique! project by the 6th of March 2022.

The free-form motivation letter can be anywhere from 2000 to 5000 characters long. The CV (one page at most) should indicate your specialization as a critic and the length of your career. Please also include your contact information in the application. Both the cover letter and the CV must be in English.

Both documents are to be sent in PDF format as email attachments to residency@sarv.fi.

Any possible inquiries should be directed to Project Coordinator Maaria Ylikangas: maaria.ylikangas@sarv.fi or by phone +358 45 320 1373 (on-call for inquiries related to the residencies on the 16th of February 2022 between 12 and 15 EET and on the 23rd of February 2022 between 12 and 15 EET).

Those chosen for residencies will be notified by the 25th of March 2022.

Please note that due to the prevailing pandemic, events or travel may be restricted. Please keep up to date with guidelines when travelling and attending events. Shine on Critique! reserves the right to reorganise residencies as necessary.

In collaboration with the Finnish Critics’ Association and the Kone Foundation.

Shine On Critique! highlights the importance of art criticism, nurtures its diverse forms, and brings it closer to both those who write it and those who read it. The three-year project makes criticism an approachable and exciting space for exchanging ideas. Shine On Critique! is carried out by the Finnish Critics’ Association and funded by the Kone Foundation.
