Elisabeth Lebovici Awarded the 2026 AICA Distinguished Prize

October 13, 2026

AICA International is pleased to announce that Elisabeth Lebovici has been awarded the 2026 AICA Distinguished Prize, recognising her contributions to art criticism and her work as a writer, editor, and activist.

Elisabeth Lebovici is an art worker living in Paris. She holds a PhD from University Paris X (1983) and is an alumna of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (ISP, 1980).

She was editor-in-chief of Beaux-Arts Magazine (1988–1990) and of A Les Aventures de l’Art. For fifteen years (1991–2006), she worked as a culture editor for the daily newspaper Libération.

From 2006 to 2024, she co-curated, with Patricia Falguières and Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, the seminar Something You Should Know: Artists and Producers at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. She has maintained her blog since 2006 and is active on Instagram.

As an activist with Act Up-Paris in the early 1990’s, Lebovici’s critical stance was transformed by feminist, queer, and activist methodologies, which she developed in her writings and through numerous lectures, seminars, and symposiums.

She is the author, with Catherine Gonnard, of a history of women artists in Paris between 1880 and the 2000s: Femmes/artistes, Artistes/femmes, Paris de 1880 à nos jours (Paris: Hazan, 2007).

Her book Ce que le sida m’a fait. Art et Activisme à la fin du XXe siècle (Zurich: JRP/“Lectures Maison Rouge”, 2017 and 2021), or “What AIDS Has Done to Me: Art and Activism at the End of the 20th Century”, led to the exhibition EXPOSÉ·ES (“Exposed”) at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, from 16 February to 14 May 2023.

A member of “La collective Greater Paris”, she was also one of the co-founders of the lesbian fund LIG/Lesbiennes d’intérêt général. She is currently working on a book titled I haven’t seen anything.

Please join us in congratulating Elisabeth Lebovici, recipient of the 2026 AICA Distinguished Prize.
