This webinar gives us the opportunity to approach the critical reflection of Ticio Escobar, the important Latin American theoretician and art critic awarded by Aica in 2011, author of the first book in the Art Critics of the World Series, La Invención de la Distancia (The Invention of Distance). We will follow the construction of his thought up to his recent book Aura Latente (Latent Aura).
The invention of Distance articulates four essays based on the distance that arouses the desire of the gaze, establishes the form and the necessary interval for the work to look, in turn, at the viewer. That aura distance is characteristic of art: the work must detach itself from the object and move it away, even minimally, in order to process it aesthetically, conceptually and poetically and re-present it through detours that make it more complex and intensify the perception. The theme of the aura is taken up in the recently launched book, Aura Latente (Latent Aura). In this publication, the subject is considered in the context of the contingency of contemporary art, which has lost the endorsement of idealism of metaphysical origin and must be considered in situations of specific space and time. The aura of current art is in a potential, latent state: it depends on each setting capable of activating it.
Este seminario web nos da la oportunidad de seguir la reflexión crítica del teórico y crítico de arte latinoamericano, Ticio Escobar, quien recibió el Premio de Distinción de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte – AICA, en 2011. Su libro La Invención de la Distancia fue el primer que se publicó en la Serie Art Critics of the World de AICA. En este encuentro con Ticio Escobar se hablara de dos momentos de reflexión crítica en su obra - una confrontación entre La Invención de la Distancia y Aura Latente, su más reciente publicación.
La Invención de la Distancia articula cuatro ensayos basados en la distancia que despierta el deseo de la mirada, establece la forma y el intervalo necesario para que el trabajo mire, a su vez, al espectador. Esa distancia del aura es característica del arte: la obra debe separarse del objeto y alejarse, incluso mínimamente, para procesarla estética, conceptual y poéticamente y volver a presentarla a través de desvíos que lo hacen más complejo e intensifican la percepción. El tema del aura es retomado en el libro recientemente presentado Aura Latente. En esta publicación, ese tema se considera en el contexto de la contingencia del arte contemporáneo, que ha perdido el respaldo del idealismo de origen metafísico y debe considerarse en situaciones de espacio y tiempo específicos. El aura del arte actual está en un estado potencial latente: depende de cada configuración capaz de activarlo.
Ticio Escobar is born in Asunción, Paraguay, in 1947. Curator, teacher, critic and cultural promoter, he was President of the Association for the Support of Indigenous Communities of Paraguay, International Association of Art Critics - Paraguay Section, Director of Culture of Asunción and Minister of Culture of Paraguay. Author of the National Law of Culture of Paraguay and co-author of the National Heritage Law. He published around 15 individual books on theory of art and culture. He is the founder of the Museum of Indigenous Art of Paraguay, made by his personal collection. He has received international awards, as well as condecorations awarded by Argentina, Brazil and France and Honoris Causa doctorates awarded by Argentinean universities. Escobar received the Bartolomé de las Casas Award in Spain for his support of indigenous causes in America. He is the director of the Center for Visual Arts / Museo del Barro, in Paraguay.
Ticio Escobar nació en Asunción, Paraguay, en 1947, es curador, profesor, crítico y promotor cultural. Fue Presidente de la Asociación de Apoyo a las Comunidades Indígenas del Paraguay, Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte- Sección Paraguay, Director de Cultura de Asunción y Ministro de Cultura de Paraguay. Autor de la Ley Nacional de Cultura de Paraguay y coautor de la Ley Nacional de Patrimonio. Publicó una quincena de libros individuales sobre teoría del arte y la cultura. Es fundador del Museo de Arte Indígena de Paraguay, formado con sus colecciones Ha recibido premios internacionales, así como condecoraciones otorgadas por Argentina, Brasil y Francia y doctorados Honoris Causa concedidos por universidades argentinas. Ha recibido en España el Premio Bartolomé de las Casas por su apoyo a las causas indígenas de América. Es director del Centro de Artes Visuales/ Museo del Barro.
